The type of treatment varies depending on the diagnosis:
For non-scarring alopecia, topical preparations (corticosteroids, minoxidil, anthralin), intralesional or systemic treatments with corticosteroids are used.
Autologous mesotherapy can sometimes be used for optimal results.
We usually use topical creams and infiltrations into the affected skin for scarring alopecias such as lichen follicular, lupus, and corticosteroids.
In addition, systemic treatments can be used where required. For alopecia areata accompanied by inflammation, treatment includes antibiotics and isotretinoin.
The diagnosis is made with trichoscopy, i.e., the dermatoscopy of the hairs and the scalp using a dermatoscope or polarized light video microscope.
It is a harmless, painless examination and can be repeated every 3 to 6 months.
When the restoration of the thinned area of the scalp is indicated, the dermatologist can provide treatment with a hair transplant.
